Ardmore - historic seaside village
St. Declan founded Ireland's earliest Christian settlement in Ardmore in 416 A.D. before the arrival of St. Patrick. The 12th century Round Tower is 29 metres high and is the best example of an Irish Round Tower. The stone carvings on the west gable of the cathedral are special to Ardmore and depict biblical scenes from the early christianisation of Ardmore. Nearby are St Declan's Grave (Beannachan), Ogham stones and St. Declan's Well (hermitage). The Pattern of Ardmore, celebrating St Declan, occurs on July 24th each year, when special religious ceremonies take place.
The Round Tower overlooks a beautiful bay, sandy beaches and a quiet picturesque fishing village. Ardmore is an ideal family resort. Ardmore is a winner of Ireland's Tidiest Village Award.
Ardmore is perfect starting point for walks, be it the long distance 80 km St Declan's Way or the shorter cliff (one hour) and beach walks.
